Settlement and British citizenship: how they connect

Updated 2 November 2026

Settlement (indefinite leave to remain) is a key step towards British citizenship. The new rules change the settlement wait, not the citizenship rules themselves, but the two are linked.

What the government has said

The Earned Settlement response describes settlement as something that can provide a route to British citizenship. It does not set out any changes to the naturalisation rules. The earlier Home Office announcement of the policy in November 2025 described citizenship as available a year after settlement, requiring a pass in the Life in the UK test and additional fees.

What that means in practice

Naturalisation has its own requirements, such as residence, good character and absence limits. Check the current Home Office guidance, or speak to an OISC-regulated adviser or solicitor, before planning around a date.
